Approval Granted for Continued Operations

REACH Explained in Brief

The term "REACH" stands for the European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals. Its purpose is to regulate the handling of chemical substances within the European Union, focusing on registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals. The primary goal is to ensure human health and environmental protection.

Hard chrome plating is a surface coating made of chromium, highly valued for its hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion protection. However, chromium, especially hexavalent chromium, is classified as a potentially hazardous substance for both health and the environment, making it subject to REACH regulations, which require special authorization.

Such authorization is granted by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) after a thorough review and under strict conditions for a limited period. At Hartchrom Beck, we have spared no effort or expense and have pursued two authorization processes to ensure a smooth and compliant chrome plating process in our facility.

We initiated a team authorization in collaboration with a small group of other hard chrome plating specialists. This process is now in its final stages. Over two years, we worked closely with the Ramboll Institute to prepare a highly precise authorization application. Following a thorough evaluation of our submission, ECHA has proposed a review period of 7 years, which is currently awaiting final confirmation by the European Commission.

I have included a link where you can track the progress of the authorization directly on the ECHA website.

After this authorized period expires, an extension can be requested from ECHA.

Additionally, we are members of CETACSub2, which provides us with further authorization coverage.

What This Means for You

Companies using hard chrome plating must comply with REACH regulations and ensure they have a valid authorization. We are proud to be part of this group, offering you the certainty and reliability you need.

REACH Authorization for Hartchrom-beck GmbH

As a reliable partner in metal finishing, we not only meet the highest technical requirements - but also the strict legal specifications of the EU.

Since May 2025, we have held an official REACH authorization from the European Commission in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006. This authorization concerns the use of chromium trioxide - a key substance in hard chrome plating - and confirms that our processes meet the applicable requirements for

health, environmental protection, and occupational safety.

For our customers, this means:

  • Legally secure processing of chromium trioxide within the EU
  • Transparent documentation and audited procedures
  • Reliability for long-term cooperation

REACH authorization is another milestone for us, underlining our responsibility toward our employees, the environment, and our customers. We stand for quality - with certified processes and lived responsibility.

What is REACH?

REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals, which focuses on the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals.

REACH has been in effect since 2007 and is designed to provide high protection for human health and the environment. At the same time, REACH aims to ensure the free movement of chemicals within the internal market, promoting competitiveness and innovation. REACH ensures that manufacturers, importers, and downstream users take responsibility for the chemicals they use.
